The Carolina Hurricanes pulled off one of the most significant blockbuster trades in recent memory by acquiring Colorado Avalanche star Mikko Rantanen earlier this season. Unfortunately, the move hasn’t delivered the anticipated results for Carolina. At 28, Rantanen was a formidable offensive player in Colorado, boasting an average of 1.31 points per game. Since joining the Hurricanes, however, his performance has taken a hit, with his production plummeting to just 0.545 points per game, well below expectations.
Complicating matters, Rantanen is on an expiring contract with a $ 9.25 million cap hit (with half retained), an already substantial figure. He and his agents are seeking a new deal in the mid-eight-figure range that would position him among the league’s highest earners. With the Hurricanes facing cap constraints this summer, parting ways with Rantanen might be a sensible option.
