DJ Lagway Opens Up About How Florida Introduced Him to the Florida State Rivalry
The rivalry between the Florida Gators and the Florida State Seminoles is one of the most intense in college football, and for quarterback DJ Lagway, it’s a rivalry he’s already deeply passionate about.
Lagway recently appeared on Outta Pocket with RGIII, where he shared how the Florida program immerses its players in the traditions and rivalries of the school from the moment they arrive on campus. It was during this introduction that he first learned about the significance of the Florida State rivalry.
“When you come in, they give you a seminar about all the rivalries,” Lagway explained. “It’s like a one- or two-hour video about different rivalries, key moments from the games, and more. It really gets you fired up. So now, I’ve got a deep hatred for Florida State.”
Originally, Lagway was expected to serve as a backup to Graham Mertz in 2024. However, after Mertz suffered a season-ending injury, Lagway stepped in as a freshman and showcased the talent that made him a highly coveted recruit. This included a solid performance in the game against Florida State, where Lagway completed 14 of 22 pass attempts for 133 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, helping the Gators secure a 31-11 win.
The victory over Florida State marked the Gators’ first win in the series since 2021, bringing their all-time record against the Seminoles to 38-28-2. The rivalry has produced several iconic moments in college football, such as the “Choke at Doak” in 1996 when both teams were ranked first and second, and the 1997 Sugar Bowl.
While Florida has other major rivalries within the SEC, the one with Florida State holds a unique place, partly due to the fact that both programs often recruit the same players.
Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Lagway is focused on taking his game to the next level. He believes that improved play from the offensive line will be key to the team’s success.
“I say the O-line. We’ve got everybody coming back. I think the O-line is going to be the best in America,” Lagway said. “Everybody is coming back. I think we’re just missing one, but everyone else is returning. It’s going to click right away. I’m excited. It’s going to be good.”
After a mixed 2024 season, the Gators face significant pressure in 2025. With high expectations now placed on him, Lagway knows that much of the team’s success will depend on his performance.
