DK Metcalf Requests Trade from Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks’ wide receiver situation takes another unexpected turn. Following the release of franchise icon Tyler Lockett, star receiver DK Metcalf has officially asked for a trade, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
At 27 years old, Metcalf has been the subject of trade rumors for several years, with speculation intensifying during last week’s NFL Scouting Combine. Now, it appears the Seahawks are allowing him to explore other options.
However, this development still comes as a surprise. Just days ago, some insiders were confident the Seahawks wouldn’t be moving Metcalf, and even the team’s leadership indicated they had future plans for him. Head coach Mike Macdonald recently spoke about the team’s focus on improving the offense, mentioning Metcalf as a key piece despite his injury struggles during the season. “We want to get the ball to DK, we want to make sure he’s a focal point of our offense for sure,” Macdonald stated at the Combine.

A second-round pick in 2019 from Ole Miss, Metcalf has been consistently productive throughout his career in Seattle, surpassing 900 receiving yards in each of his six seasons. His standout year was 2020, when he posted 83 catches, 1,303 yards, and 10 touchdowns, earning second-team All-Pro honors.
However, salary cap issues are complicating matters. Metcalf, in the final year of his contract, could demand over $30 million annually in a new deal, a hefty sum for the Seahawks to commit to a player who has shown inconsistency. Even without cap constraints, the team may be hesitant to lock him down long-term at that price.
While Metcalf’s time in Seattle has been successful, it looks like it may be nearing its end, a bittersweet outcome in the ruthless business of the NFL.
