After spending nearly 14 seasons as a career-long New York Ranger, Chris Kreider may have played his final game with the team. The franchise’s all-time leading playoff goal scorer is currently on the injured reserve list due to an undisclosed upper-body injury, with no set timeline for his return.
According to Vincent Mercogliano from USA Today Sports, there are indications that the team is moving toward an “eventual split” with the veteran winger and is “motivated to trade” him, either before the NHL trade deadline on Friday at 3 p.m. ET or during the offseason. Kreider, the longest-serving Ranger, was initially put on the trade block by general manager Chris Drury during a losing streak in December.
Drury informed all 31 other NHL general managers that Kreider, among others, was available for trade. Considering his current injury from the 4 Nation’s Face-Off tournament and a previous issue with back spasms earlier this season, if Kreider isn’t traded, it may be due to health concerns. Nonetheless, over the weekend, David Pagnotta from The Fourth Period reported on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio that Kreider’s name has “continued to surface in trade discussions despite his current injury.”
At 33 years old, Kreider has two years left on his contract following this season, with a cap hit of $ 6.5 million. His contract also includes a 15-team no-trade list, which gives him some influence over potential trade destinations.
