Bret Bielema Adds New Members to Illinois Football Staff
Illinois head coach Bret Bielema has recently made several key additions to the Illini football coaching staff, including familiar faces and some with prior ties to Bielema. Here’s a quick overview of the new hires:

On Thursday, Bielema announced the hiring of James White as assistant running backs coach. White, who was recruited by Bielema to Wisconsin and played three seasons there under his guidance, has a notable NFL career, winning three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. Bielema emphasized White’s leadership both on and off the field, noting his experience in the Big Ten and the NFL would be invaluable to the team’s running backs.
White rushed for over 4,000 yards and 48 touchdowns at Wisconsin before being drafted by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played eight seasons in New England, under head coach Bill Belichick.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to work with Coach Bielema and the staff,” White said. “I’m excited to learn and grow with the team as we strive to be our best every day.”
Antonio James Returns to Illinois as Assistant Defensive Line Coach
On Wednesday, Illinois announced the hiring of former Illini defensive lineman Antonio James as assistant defensive line coach. Although James hasn’t played for the team in nearly two decades, he brings significant coaching experience, including a recent stint at Southern Illinois where he held various coaching roles from 2022 to the end of last season. He also coached at Urbana High School from 2011-2013.
Bielema praised James’ deep understanding of the university and the state of Illinois, noting his extensive experience with defensive linemen. James expressed excitement about returning to his alma mater to help build a new legacy.
“My family and I are thrilled to be part of Illini Nation,” James said. “I’m honored to come back to my alma mater and contribute to the great work Coach Bielema and the staff have started.”
Artur Sitkowski Promoted to Co-Quarterbacks Coach
On Tuesday, former Illinois quarterback Artur Sitkowski was promoted to co-quarterbacks coach. Sitkowski, who previously served as an assistant quarterbacks coach, will now work closely with Bielema and offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. to further develop quarterback Luke Altmyer and the rest of the Illinois quarterbacks.
Sitkowski expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue contributing to the team, highlighting the impact the university has had on his life.
“I’m extremely thankful for the chance to stay part of this amazing program,” Sitkowski said. “I’m excited to continue working with the quarterbacks and helping them develop, both on and off the field.”
Sitkowski’s continued presence should help Altmyer build on his strong performance from 2023, where he improved his passing touchdowns and reduced turnovers under Sitkowski’s guidance.
