Giants Make Bold Move in New Mock Draft
In FOX Sports’ latest NFL Mock Draft, the New York Giants opt for the best available prospect rather than addressing their roster needs, despite their urgent need for a quarterback.
The Giants are in desperate need of a quarterback, but what happens if top prospects like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are already off the board when it’s their turn to pick?
In Jason McIntyre’s latest mock draft, he addresses this situation with a surprising choice.
Giants GM Joe Schoen has promised to explore every possibility in the team’s quarterback search, including considering veteran Aaron Rodgers. McIntyre believes that Rodgers could be the Giants’ Week 1 starter. If that happens, the Giants may be less inclined to trade up for a quarterback, leaving the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns to select Ward and Sanders with the first two picks.
With the top quarterbacks unavailable, McIntyre predicts the Giants will select Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter with the third overall pick, passing on other prospects like Colorado’s Travis Hunter, Michigan’s Mason Graham, and LSU’s Will Campbell.
“The Giants are desperate for a quarterback, either through the draft or free agency,” McIntyre wrote. “It wouldn’t be surprising if they signed Aaron Rodgers and then selected Carter, the best pass rusher in the draft. If Rodgers stays healthy, the Giants could contend for a wild-card spot.”
Last offseason, the Giants made a big trade for outside linebacker Brian Burns from the Panthers to pair with former first-round pick Kayvon Thibodeaux, strengthening their pass rush. The team ranked 13th in the NFL with a 41% pass-rush win rate and finished in the top 10 with 45 sacks.
Despite Thibodeaux missing five games due to injury, the duo found their rhythm after Week 12, combining for 41 of the team’s 79 pressures since then. They were among the NFL’s best pass-rushing duos, with both players generating pressures and forcing turnovers.
As the legendary Ernie Accorsi once said, “You can never have too many pass rushers.” Adding Carter to the lineup would elevate the Giants’ defensive front. Last season, Carter led the nation with 23.5 tackles for loss and ranked seventh nationally with 12 sacks, adding four pass deflections and two forced fumbles.
Carter has expressed excitement about the possibility of joining the Giants’ pass rush. “My goal is to come in and be ‘The Guy,’” Carter said at the combine. “If I join a team with established players, I’ll still compete for a spot right away.”
While missing out on the top quarterbacks would be disappointing, the Giants have options to soften the blow. Signing a veteran quarterback like Rodgers, Russell Wilson, or Sam Darnold would provide insurance. They could also target a second-tier quarterback in the later rounds, such as Jalen Milroe, Jaxson Dart, or Will Howard.
Carter is considered one of the top prospects in the draft and would certainly improve the roster. However, the Giants have other pressing needs that could influence their draft strategy. Players like Hunter and Graham could fill key roles, and it will be interesting to see if Schoen opts for the best available talent or focuses on team needs.
