The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly taking their first steps towards bolstering their defense, with Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram emerging as a potential target. As the team looks to strengthen their lineup and make a push for the playoffs, adding a solid defenseman has become a priority.
According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, Byram is seen as an ideal fit for Detroit’s needs on the back end. In a recent article, Seravalli highlighted that Detroit’s biggest area of concern has been their defense. With their playoff hopes on the line, he suggested that the Red Wings are likely to be active buyers at the trade deadline, with their “top objective” being to improve their blueline.
For the Red Wings, addressing their defensive shortcomings has been a challenge in recent years. Seravalli pointed out that Detroit has been “chasing their tail” in an attempt to solidify their defense corps. While they’ve made moves to strengthen other areas of their roster, including the acquisition of forwards Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko over the summer, it’s clear that the blue line remains a weak spot.
Seravalli also noted that Detroit’s approach to the trade deadline this season might be slightly unconventional, with the team focusing on adding defensive depth after addressing their forward positions earlier.
