Darius Lassiter’s Return to BYU Football in 2025 Is ‘Highly Unlikely’
In November, BYU celebrated 20 seniors on senior night during the game against Houston, and one of the honorees was senior wide receiver Darius Lassiter. Lassiter had exhausted his NCAA eligibility and was playing his final game at Lavell Edwards Stadium.
However, in December, the NCAA granted a blanket waiver allowing all FBS players with junior college experience an additional year of eligibility. At first, it seemed Lassiter might get another year. He was interested in returning to BYU, but the waiver turned out to be less favorable than expected.
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake recently stated that it is “highly unlikely” Lassiter will qualify for a return to BYU in 2025.
“Highly unlikely,” Sitake said when asked about Lassiter’s status. “We’ve tried to give it our best shot under the NCAA rules, but they control what these players can do. We’ll see what happens, but I know he’ll have a chance at the next level too. I just wish the NCAA would sort things out, so our guys know if they’ll have the full opportunity to play or not.”
In the 2024 season, Lassiter was BYU’s second-leading wide receiver, with 703 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 45 receptions. He’ll be remembered for his game-winning touchdown catch against Oklahoma State.
If Lassiter does return, BYU would have both of its top wide receivers back for 2025, with Chase Roberts also planning to return. The two combined for over 1,500 receiving yards last season.
