In a recent mock draft, the Chargers focus on bolstering their offense with two significant additions for quarterback Justin Herbert. With their first two picks, the team aims to address their offensive shortcomings, particularly at wide receiver alongside Ladd McConkey. The lack of playmakers beyond McConkey was evident in their Wild Card loss, but with Joe Hortiz and Jim Harbaugh now in charge, the team has the resources to resolve these issues.
While they will be active in free agency, the Chargers may also make a splash in the draft. ESPN’s Jordan Reid’s two-round mock draft has the Chargers picking up two key offensive players early.
At No. 22 overall, Reid has the Chargers selecting North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton. He believes Hampton is a perfect fit for the Chargers’ downhill running game, noting his 6-foot, 221-pound frame and his compatibility with Greg Roman’s offense. Reid also mentions that some scouts have Hampton ranked higher than Ashton Jeanty. After rushing for 1,660 yards and 15 touchdowns on 5.9 yards per carry, Hampton is considered one of the top running back prospects in this class and could become the Chargers’ lead back for years.
In the second round, Reid has the Chargers picking LSU tight end Mason Taylor. At 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds, Taylor is a versatile tight end who excels in the passing game. With 546 yards and two touchdowns, Taylor offers Justin Herbert a reliable target and would provide an upgrade over Will Dissly in the tight end position.
