Myles Garrett’s Record-Breaking Contract Includes an Interesting Twist
Myles Garrett’s massive new contract could present some challenges for the Cleveland Browns in the future.
On Sunday morning, Garrett and the Browns agreed to a massive four-year extension worth over $204 million, with $123 million guaranteed. His average annual salary of $40 million makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
However, there’s an important detail in Garrett’s contract: a no-trade clause.
At first glance, a no-trade clause might seem beneficial for the Browns, especially after they spent a month insisting they wouldn’t trade Garrett despite his previous wishes. But this clause could actually give Garrett more control over his future.
A no-trade clause doesn’t prevent Cleveland from trading Garrett, but it does require the team to get Garrett’s approval before any deal can be made. This means Garrett could choose where he goes if he decides to be traded in the future. For instance, if the Browns receive an attractive trade offer, Garrett could refuse to waive his no-trade clause if he prefers to play for a championship contender.
Garrett is now one of only eight NFL players with a no-trade clause, joining quarterbacks Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes, Jared Goff, Kirk Cousins, Dak Prescott, and Josh Allen. He is the only non-quarterback to have this clause in his contract.
Despite the potential future implications of this clause, the Browns are likely thrilled to have their star player locked in for the long term as they head into the 2025 season.
