Most Overlooked Snub of Duke Basketball in ACC Honors

The starting point guard for the top-ranked Duke basketball team is a dynamic force, consistently elevating the Blue Devils to new heights.

Graduate guard Sion James, who has been a standout playmaker, scorer, and defender, is an essential part of the team’s success. As the primary ball handler, he drives Duke’s offense with remarkable efficiency. James, a former four-year starter at Tulane, has blossomed into a 6-foot-6, 220-pound force in his senior year. He’s been a starter for Duke since their Dec. 4 victory over No. 3 Auburn, contributing in every game while never fouling out.

Now fully in sync with Duke’s talented roster, including freshmen Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel, junior guard Tyrese Proctor, and rookie center Khaman Maluach, James has averaged 8.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.2 turnovers in 24.7 minutes per game. His shooting splits of 53.9 percent from the field, 42.6 percent from three, and 80.8 percent from the free-throw line highlight his all-around game.

James was named to the ACC All-Defensive Team on Monday, but despite his crucial role in leading a historic 28-3 regular season and 19-1 ACC record under head coach Jon Scheyer, he was the only Blue Devil starter left off the three All-ACC teams and the 10 Honorable Mentions.
