Chargers Trade Proposal Sends $43 Million Defender to Los Angeles for Draft Pick

As the first day of free agency begins, the Los Angeles Chargers face uncertainties along their defensive line. One NFL analyst suggests they consider trading for a Jacksonville Jaguars defender who might be available.

The Chargers have made some notable moves in free agency so far, including re-signing veteran edge rusher Khalil Mack and adding running back Najee Harris. However, one area still unaddressed is the defensive line, especially after losing Poona Ford to the Los Angeles Rams, and with Teair Tart and Morgan Fox set to hit the open market on Wednesday.

Beyond free agency, the Chargers could explore the trade market as a way to solve their defensive line issue. One possible target for general manager Joe Hortiz is Jacksonville Jaguars interior defensive lineman Arik Armstead.

Sportsnaut’s Matt Johnson believes the Chargers should pursue Armstead, suggesting a trade that would send the veteran defender to Los Angeles in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

“After signing Arik Armstead to a three-year, $51 million deal last year, the Jacksonville Jaguars might be regretting that decision,” Johnson writes. “He was a big disappointment in 2024, to the point where Jacksonville could use its first-round pick to find his replacement. With a new regime in place, it might be beneficial for both sides to trade Armstead. The Chargers would be a great fit, especially with Armstead returning to California. His experience and work ethic would also be a great asset in the Chargers’ locker room. Pairing him with Tuli Tuipulotu could transform Los Angeles’ interior defensive line into a strength.”

Armstead, who signed a massive three-year, $43.5 million contract in 2024, didn’t live up to expectations in his first season. The 31-year-old managed just two sacks, seven QB hits, and three tackles for loss, although he did post a solid 36 pressures. His pass-rush grade of 70.0 from Pro Football Focus ranked 44th among edge defenders.

Joining a contender like the Chargers could help rejuvenate Armstead, who struggled in Jacksonville last season. His versatility, being able to play both inside and outside, would provide the Chargers with valuable depth along the defensive line.

While the Chargers might be willing to take a chance on Armstead for a Day 3 pick, his hefty contract could be a sticking point. Los Angeles would likely ask Jacksonville to cover some of his remaining salary, something the Jaguars might be willing to do for a better return.

Regardless, with ample cap space, the Chargers have the ability to absorb Armstead’s contract, making this a worthwhile move for a team aiming to contend in 2025.
