Insider Explains the Texans’ Controversial Blockbuster Trade
The Houston Texans made a headline-grabbing trade at the start of NFL free agency, sending star offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders in exchange for four draft picks. The move raised eyebrows, with many questioning the decision, especially given the Texans’ existing offensive line issues.
However, NFL insider James Palmer has offered insight into why Houston made the move, and his explanation sheds light on the rationale behind it.
“From what I understand, the Texans were never going to offer Laremy Tunsil, at 31 years old, a new massive contract, and he wants one,” Palmer explained.

He also pointed out that key players like quarterback C.J. Stroud, edge rusher Will Anderson Jr., and cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. will soon need contract extensions, making it difficult for the Texans to commit to Tunsil financially.
“Houston believes Tunsil can still play, but there’s a belief that his best years may be behind him,” Palmer added, noting that Tunsil led the NFL with 17 penalties last season.
Tunsil has been a standout player, earning three consecutive Pro Bowl selections and five overall since entering the NFL with the Miami Dolphins in 2016. He was traded to the Texans just before the 2019 season began.
While Tunsil had a successful run in Houston, it seems the Texans decided it was time to move on while he still held significant trade value.
Now, the Texans will look to find a replacement for Tunsil in next month’s NFL Draft.
