Jets Reportedly Lose Underappreciated Safety to AFC East Rival on 1-Year Deal

After watching Morgan Moses leave for the New England Patriots, the New York Jets have now lost another important player to an AFC East rival.
On Tuesday, veteran safety Ashtyn Davis reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. The contract, which won’t become official until Wednesday afternoon, is worth $2.5 million in base value, with incentives potentially pushing it to $3 million, according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.
A third-round pick in 2020, Davis never became a consistent starter for the Jets. However, the University of California product proved to be an underrated asset over his five seasons with the team, recording eight interceptions and 15 pass breakups in 22 starts.
Davis played a career-high 81% of snaps in 2021 but saw much less action in 2023 and 2024, with usage rates of 19% and 26%, respectively. Still, when excluding snap counts, Pro Football Focus ranked Davis among the top 30 safeties last season, and he could have ranked even higher if not for a mediocre pass-rush grade.
While Davis may not be a huge loss for the Jets and they likely have their reasons for not offering him a similar team-friendly contract, he’s a quietly effective player who could turn out to be a valuable addition for the Dolphins.
