Chargers’ Loss of Evan Engram to Broncos Is a Huge Blow for LA, New Details Reveal
The Los Angeles Chargers failed to secure tight end Evan Engram in the free agency race, with the AFC West rival Denver Broncos ultimately landing him.
At first glance, this seems like a typical loss—another team with a clear need at the position swooped in on a potential weapon that could enhance their offense.
However, new details make the situation far worse. According to 9News’ Mike Klis, the offers from both the Chargers and Broncos were nearly identical:
“His visit included a physical, and after flying back to Atlanta on a Tuesday night, he and his wife Emily spent Wednesday morning discussing and praying over the decision. In the end, the offers from both teams were nearly the same. Engram chose the Broncos.”
It’s possible the Chargers were simply used as leverage by Engram and his representatives to get him to his preferred destination. Who knows?
The bottom line, however, is that the Chargers have lost out on a former first-round pick despite needing a top-tier tight end to complement their growing offense with Justin Herbert at quarterback.
Fans may point to offensive coordinator Greg Roman as part of the issue, but scheme and the offensive philosophies of both teams played a role too. Tight ends seeking significant passing game involvement likely wouldn’t want to play in a run-heavy offense like the Broncos, especially after they added Najee Harris.
Now, the Chargers may need to focus on drafting a first-round, pass-catching tight end, which could make their plans predictable and expose them to being outbid for players like Colston Loveland, narrowing their options.
Either way, fans have every right to be frustrated—especially considering the Chargers entered free agency with $90 million in cap space and should not be losing out on key targets, particularly not a No. 1 tight end, to a division rival.
