CBS Critiques Mike Norvell’s Contract—Why FSU is Still Betting on Him
Despite a tough season, Florida State is confident in a bounce-back under Mike Norvell, backed by significant program investments, a revamped coaching staff, and a top transfer class.
It’s no secret that Florida State’s 2024 season was a disappointing one, with a 2-10 record that marked a sharp decline after the ‘Noles claimed the 2023 ACC Championship and were controversially left out of the College Football Playoff.
CBS Sports recently called attention to Norvell’s restructured contract, which runs through 2031 and includes a hefty $63 million buyout, following one of the worst seasons in Florida State history. “FSU fans, brace yourselves. Norvell’s reworked deal, after last year’s two-win disaster, is a major financial commitment for the Seminoles,” wrote Brad Crawford. While the Seminoles were financially locked in due to Norvell’s new deal after their 2023 conference win, no one could have predicted the steep fall from grace the program faced in 2024. While initial portal evaluations were successful, last season’s roster issues proved costly for Norvell’s staff.
Despite the rough year, FSU has reloaded with the No. 7 transfer class in the country and is primed for a rebound in 2025. Norvell made significant changes in 2024, replacing both offensive and defensive coordinators, as well as the wide receivers coach, while also reshuffling the defensive line staff and turning over play-calling duties to former UCF head coach Gus Malzahn.
However, it’s not all negative. Many Seminole fans still believe in Norvell’s leadership, with his coaching expertise, energy, and ambition continuing to shine. Plus, with a new football-only facility in the works and millions of dollars being poured into stadium renovations, the program is on the upswing. Florida State recently restructured its ACC contract to boost its brand and finances, ensuring they stay competitive with other Power Four programs. Additionally, Norvell personally invested $4.5 million back into the program to support its future success.
While last season was tough, there’s much more happening behind the scenes. With Norvell and Athletic Director Michael Alford at the helm, Florida State is making strategic moves to turn things around and push forward in 2025.
