A Prediction Emerges That UNC Football Could Flip Top SEC Commit

UNC football may be close to securing a four-star recruit from former Duke head coach Mike Elko.

Trashawn Ruffin, a junior defensive tackle from North Duplin High School (N.C.), has been committed to the Texas A&M Aggies and their head coach Mike Elko since late October. However, the 6-foot-3, 331-pound prospect’s commitment hasn’t stopped first-year UNC head coach Bill Belichick and his staff from pursuing him.

Ruffin, who received an offer from UNC under former head coach Mack Brown last September, has now confirmed plans for a three-day official visit with the Tar Heels during the first weekend of June.

On Sunday afternoon, national recruiting analyst Anna Adams made a prediction in favor of UNC on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, marking the first new projection since Ruffin committed to the Aggies.

The highly sought-after prospect from Mount Olive, N.C., is ranked No. 195 overall in the 247Sports 2026 Composite, No. 12 in the state, and No. 24 among defensive linemen.

Ruffin has also scheduled official visits to LSU (May 30), Texas A&M (June 13), and South Carolina (June 20).
