Jay Bilas Says Tennessee Volunteers Aren’t National Title Contenders in NCAA Tournament

College basketball analyst Jay Bilas believes the Tennessee Volunteers aren’t contenders for the national title in the NCAA Tournament.

As the tournament officially kicked off with the First Four games on Tuesday, with Alabama State and North Carolina securing their spots, the first round begins Thursday. As fans finalize their predictions, Bilas shared his thoughts on the top contenders for the title.

In a video with college basketball content creator Ryan Hammer, Bilas discussed which teams had a legitimate shot at the national title. When it came to Tennessee, Bilas delivered an answer that may not sit well with Volunteers fans.

“Barely no. Three weeks ago, yes, but right now, no,” Bilas stated.

While Tennessee has proven they can beat top teams—defeating Florida, Alabama, Auburn, and Kentucky during the regular season—their recent performance against Florida raised some concerns heading into the postseason.

The Tennessee men’s basketball program has never made it to the Final Four, with two Elite Eight appearances, including last year. Many believe this could be the year they break that streak, but doubts still linger about how far the Volunteers can go in the tournament.
