The Texas Longhorns are expected to part ways with head coach Rodney Terry following a tough season.
AUSTIN – The Texas Longhorns’ 2024-25 season came to an end on Wednesday with an 86-80 loss to the Xavier Musketeers in the First Four. That defeat seemed to signal the end of Rodney Terry’s tenure as head coach after an Elite Eight appearance, followed by two underwhelming seasons.
After the game, multiple reports indicated that Texas is likely to move on from Terry, potentially opening up a new coaching position in Austin. One report, in particular, from Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68, drew significant attention following the loss. Texas reporter Eric Henry of Horns247 directly asked Terry about his future during the postgame press conference, prompting Terry to reflect on his career at Texas.
“When it’s all said and done, it’s in God’s hands,” Terry responded when asked about the reports. “I live my life by faith. If God has plans for me to be here, then I’ll be here. If He has plans for me to go somewhere else, that’s His plan. I follow God, not man. My faith is strong.”
If Terry does leave, he will depart Texas with a 62-37 overall record and a 4-3 NCAA Tournament record, including Wednesday’s loss.
“I’ve been at Texas for 13 years, and every year I’ve been here, we’ve made the NCAA Tournament,” Terry reflected. “I take great pride in being a Longhorn. I’ve been part of the top five seasons in the program’s history, and I credit our players for putting themselves in a position to compete tonight.”
With the job likely to be open soon, the Longhorns face an intriguing offseason. It remains to be seen what direction athletic director Chris Del Conte will take.
