Chargers make a move, meet with free agent to address key need
The Los Angeles Chargers are taking action again in free agency, focusing on the tight end position.
Tyler Conklin is the latest player to visit the team, as reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
At 29, Conklin is one of the top remaining free agents and has spent the past few seasons with the New York Jets after being selected in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
There is a connection to the Chargers, as assistant general manager Chad Alexander played a significant role in the Jets’ organization when Conklin joined them.
Whether or not the connection plays a role, Conklin represents another attempt by the Chargers to strengthen their tight end depth, similar to their pursuit of Hayden Hurst. Conklin has surpassed 600 yards in a season once and set a career-high last year with four touchdown receptions.
Signing Conklin wouldn’t rule out the Chargers from selecting a tight end in the first round of the upcoming draft, unlike some other potential high-profile moves, such as trading for a big-name player.
