Syracuse Football Coach Fran Brown Implements Smart Plan for Players and Their NIL Money

Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown is taking proactive steps to help his players manage their NIL earnings effectively. Recognizing that navigating the NIL era presents challenges not only for college football programs but also for the athletes benefiting from it, Brown has introduced a new initiative: weekly financial literacy lessons for the team.

To ensure players use their newfound financial knowledge wisely, 40% of their NIL earnings will be automatically saved. This initiative is supported in part by Community Bank and is taking place as Syracuse goes through its spring practices.

“Financial literacy is critical today,” Brown emphasized. “Some people think it’s something you learn only if you’re wealthy, but the reality is, you need financial literacy to become wealthy.”

Brown explained that his personal experiences growing up with financial struggles influenced the decision to implement the program. “It was tough growing up. If I had NIL money, it wouldn’t have been just for me—it would have helped my mom and prevented us from moving constantly.”

The plan is clear: players must save 40% of their NIL income. “They understand that putting aside 40% of their earnings now will help them in the long run,” Brown said. “As your coach, I won’t let you leave here with no money after making so much as a good player.”

Brown’s focus is not just on securing top players for Syracuse through NIL deals but also on ensuring they manage those earnings wisely while they’re at the university.
