A USA Today investigation revealed that three Dallas Stars employees leveraged their roles within the organization and leading youth hockey nonprofits for financial gain at the expense of thousands of families. Damon Boettcher, Lucas Reid, and Brad Buckland orchestrated numerous youth hockey tournaments run by the Stars, mandating out-of-town participants to book hotel stays for a minimum number of nights at designated hotels.

Simultaneously, the trio operated Stay2Play LLC, a separate company that acted as a middleman between the Stars and the hotels, profiting from a share of the revenue. This arrangement lasted for four and a half years, spanning from mid-2020 to December 2024.

Not only did Boettcher, Reid, and Buckland run the scheme while employed by the Stars, but they also held leadership positions within the Texas Amateur Hockey Association—USA Hockey’s state affiliate—where Reid served as president and Buckland as secretary.

When asked about the situation, the Stars declined to provide specific responses.
