Giants make a major move, sign former Seahawks quarterback in free agency
A longtime Seattle Seahawks star is heading to New York. After much speculation, quarterback Russell Wilson, who spent years with the Seattle Seahawks, is reportedly signing a one-year deal with the New York Giants, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Schefter reports that the contract is worth $10.5 million fully guaranteed, with the potential to earn up to $21 million through incentives. This represents a significant increase from the one-year, veteran minimum deal Wilson signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers last offseason, although he benefitted from the Denver Broncos paying him a large sum after his release.
At 36 years old, Wilson is now joining his third team in four years after his high-profile trade from Seattle in 2022. His tenure in Denver ended in disappointment after a fallout with head coach Sean Payton in 2023, and while he had some early success in Pittsburgh, his late-season struggles led the Steelers to move on.
Wilson does have some history with New York, as MetLife Stadium, where both the Giants and Jets play, is where he won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2013. Although Seattle’s dominant defense was the standout of that game, Wilson played well, completing 18 of 25 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns.
Wilson is expected to be the Giants’ starting quarterback, though he could face competition. The team recently signed veteran Jameis Winston to a two-year, $8 million contract. While Wilson is likely the frontrunner for the job, his starting role isn’t fully guaranteed.
With both Wilson and Winston now on the roster, it’s unlikely the Giants will draft a quarterback with their third overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, or trade up to select one, as many had previously speculated.
Although Wilson may not be the same player he was in Seattle, he remains a capable quarterback who could help the Giants, a team that has made the playoffs only twice in the past 13 seasons, establish a stronger culture.
