NC State Basketball Player Pursuing Transfer Despite Lack of Eligibility

NC State basketball big man Ben Middlebrooks is seeking a transfer despite having no remaining eligibility. Middlebrooks spent two seasons each with both the Wolfpack and Clemson.

While the NC State basketball team made an impressive Final Four run last season, many players gained significant national and local recognition. However, one key player, Ben Middlebrooks, flew under the radar. Now, just a year after the team’s historic run, Middlebrooks has decided to leave the Wolfpack program.

On Monday afternoon, On3’s Jamie Shaw reported that the 6-foot-10, 240-pound forward would enter the transfer portal, making him the first player from NC State’s basketball team to do so.

Middlebrooks played his last two seasons at NC State after transferring from ACC rival Clemson, where he spent his first two years. However, to continue playing, he will need to apply for a waiver to gain an additional year of eligibility. It’s unclear what grounds he has for the waiver, as he appeared in at least 26 games during each of his four seasons, none of which were affected by the shortened 2020-21 season.

In his most recent season with NC State, Middlebrooks became a regular starter, averaging 7.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game in 21.7 minutes per contest.

His standout moment with the Wolfpack came during their 2023-24 Round of 64 upset over No. 6 seed Texas Tech, where he scored 21 points to help push the team further into the tournament.
