Questionable Contact: Rantanen-Skinner Collision Raises Debate

During the broadcast, the TNT commentators described the contact as “incidental” as Mikko Rantanen skated through the crease while pursuing a high shot that sailed over the net.

While there’s no indication that Rantanen intentionally collided with Stuart Skinner, one can’t help but question whether he could have been more cautious in avoiding the contact.

To be fair, Rantanen doesn’t have a reputation for being a dirty player—quite the opposite. And given the speed of the game, reacting to every split-second moment is nearly impossible. However, could he have done more to steer clear of Skinner?

Rantanen’s reaction after the play didn’t suggest outright guilt, but he also didn’t seem indifferent to what happened. Ultimately, this incident may simply be one of those unfortunate moments in sports where things go awry despite the best intentions—another case of Murphy’s Law at play.

Potential Avalanche-Stars Playoff Showdown Could Spark Bad Blood

Thursday’s incident involving Rantanen and Skinner raises an interesting subplot ahead of a potential first-round playoff series between the Avalanche and Stars. If the series turns into a highly physical battle, tensions could quickly escalate between the two teams.

The situation brings back memories of the legendary Avalanche-Red Wings rivalry, which was fueled by genuine animosity and a string of heated encounters. Could this developing feud between Colorado and Dallas ignite a similar rivalry? The controversy surrounding Rantanen’s hit, coupled with the ongoing trade rumors involving star wingers, adds even more intrigue—almost like a storyline straight out of Seinfeld.

One concern for Colorado, however, is their lack of physicality. The Avalanche don’t possess many bruising players, which is why someone like Keaton Middleton could prove valuable in this series. The same goes for Erik Johnson, who could provide a much-needed physical presence if things get rough.
