
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Following Richard Pitino’s departure from New Mexico to take on the role of head coach at Xavier, UNM is now in the process of finding a new coach. KRQE Sports has learned about some potential candidates through various sources.
Isaac Chew – He currently serves as the associate head coach at UNM under Pitino and has prior coaching experience at Missouri, Marquette, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, GCU, and Murray State. Chew has already had an interview for the position.
James Borrego – The former head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, he is now an assistant coach with the New Orleans Pelicans and is an alumnus of Albuquerque Academy.
Craig Smith – Previously the head coach at Utah, Utah State, South Dakota, and Mayville State. During his tenure at Utah State, Smith guided the Aggies to a Mountain West regular season title in 2019 and secured two conference tournament championships in 2019 and 2020. He was also honored as the Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2019.
Tim Miles – Currently the head coach at San Jose State, he has held head coaching positions at Nebraska, Colorado State, North Dakota State, Southwest Minnesota State, and Mayville State.
