Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears Jr. Reflects After Auburn Defeat

An emotional Jeremy Fears Jr. expressed his feelings following Michigan State’s 70-64 loss to Auburn in the Elite Eight on Sunday.

The Spartans, led by Fears, who recorded five assists, faced a tough challenge as he struggled offensively, making just 1 of 4 shots from the field. Michigan State found themselves trailing significantly after Auburn went on a 17-0 run in the first half. However, due to the team’s history of overcoming large deficits during the tournament, Fears and his teammates remained hopeful that a comeback was possible—yet it never materialized.

After the game, Fears spoke with the media, sharing his thoughts on the loss.

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo also addressed reporters, offering the following opening remarks:

Izzo: “For the 30th year, I don’t think I’ve ever been prouder of a team. There’s a lot of coach-speak in sports, but these guys gave me everything. I drained them dry. They deserve a break because there’s nothing left in them. That’s how it was in the locker room—it was emotional because they gave everything, yet we started poorly. That 17-0 run we couldn’t recover from. It wasn’t from a lack of effort, but we played a good team. Broome hurt us early, but we adjusted and did a better job on him after he scored the first 6-8 points. We missed some good shots, though their defense might’ve had something to do with it.

“At the end of the day, you can’t let your last game define you. If it does, make sure you take action in your life. For Jaden [Akins], he’s not done with basketball.

“It’s been the most incredible year I’ve had, the most connected year. I’m grateful for what these players have done for me, our program, our university, and our community.”
