Saints-Browns Trade Proposal Targets 23-Year-Old QB Successor to Derek Carr

Can New Orleans afford to trade up?

Lacking a franchise quarterback has been a painful reality for the New Orleans Saints over the past five years. Since the retirement of Drew Brees in 2021, the team has struggled to find a long-term solution at quarterback. They’ve had veteran Derek Carr, a former Pro Bowler, on a $150 million contract for the last two years, but the partnership has yet to yield success.

Carr will remain the starter for the 2025 season, but the Saints may look for his replacement in the upcoming NFL Draft. The big question is how much of their future they are willing to sacrifice to secure the quarterback they desire.

One NFL writer has put forward a bold trade idea, proposing the Saints could trade up to select Shedeur Sanders as Carr’s successor.

On Sunday, Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport suggested that the Saints might send their ninth-overall pick, a 2025 third-round pick, and a 2026 first-round pick to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for the second-overall pick, where they would select Sanders.

“New Orleans should be focusing on rebuilding—stockpiling picks and going through a ‘down’ year to recover from their cap troubles. However, Saints GM Mickey Loomis has made it clear that he doesn’t see the team as a rebuilding project,” Davenport wrote.

“Derek Carr is barely a short-term solution, let alone a long-term one. If New Orleans believes in Sanders, this kind of aggressive move wouldn’t be out of character for the franchise.”

Sanders, 23, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, has impressed in college, throwing for 64 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions in the past two seasons, showcasing his accuracy and poise.

Is Sanders worth giving up a first-round pick next year? Many Saints fans may disagree, but ultimately, Loomis’ decision (with input from new head coach and QB specialist Kellen Moore) will be the deciding factor.
