Despite winning the President’s Trophy and advancing to the Eastern Conference Final last season, the New York Rangers find themselves in a tight race for the final wild-card spot with just eight games remaining. They are currently tied at 77 points with the Montreal Canadiens, who hold the last playoff position. However, Montreal has a game in hand and is set to play Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning, the Rangers made a roster move by signing a new goaltender.

“New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced today that the team has agreed to terms with goaltender Callum Tung on a three-year, entry-level contract,” the team stated in a press release.

While head coach Peter Laviolette already has his goaltending duo of Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick locked in for the playoffs, this signing is aimed at adding depth and planning for the future. Tung will join the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, on an amateur tryout for the remainder of the season.

The 21-year-old goaltender comes from the UConn Huskies, where he helped lead the team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance this year. In 15 starts, Tung recorded a .933 save percentage, a 2.01 goals-against average, and a 10-4-1 record.
