Juan Soto Shares His Thoughts on MLB’s Torpedo Bat Trend

New York Mets slugger Juan Soto recently weighed in on the new MLB trend surrounding “torpedo bats,” which has captivated the baseball community.

The major story during MLB’s opening weekend, alongside Soto’s debut with the Mets, was the surge in popularity of these torpedo bats. As explained in a March 31 article by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the design of the torpedo bat redistributes weight from the end of the bat toward the area 6 to 7 inches below the tip, where players usually make contact with the ball. Essentially, the barrel is thicker, and the weight is balanced differently compared to a standard bat.

The craze surrounding these bats exploded after the New York Yankees used them in a March 29 game, where they hit eight home runs, sparking widespread attention. While many fans hadn’t noticed the bats before, they quickly went viral.

Though the concept of torpedo bats is new to many fans, they’re not exactly a recent innovation. Players across the league have been using them for a while, and most are now well-acquainted with them.

Several Mets players and coaches have commented on the new bats, and in a March 31 article by Mike Puma of the New York Post, Soto shared his thoughts.

“It’s just another bat, which is a different shape,” Soto explained. “I think it’s the same thing guys have been using for years, like what the Yankees are using now. I saw guys in the past using it, so I don’t think it’s anything new.”

While Soto doesn’t seem particularly impressed with the torpedo bat trend, it’s possible that he might decide to try one out at some point during the season.
