Michigan Basketball a Leading Contender for Big Ten Transfer Morez Johnson
Michigan men’s basketball made waves on Monday night by securing a commitment from North Carolina guard Elliott Cadeau, and the Wolverines are far from finished with their transfer portal pursuits. Last year, under Dusty May, Michigan revamped its roster through the portal and made a Sweet 16 run. While they aren’t expected to bring in as many players this time, they still need to fill some key gaps.
With the likely departure of both Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf, Michigan is in need of larger players. The Wolverines are reportedly one of the top contenders for Illinois transfer Morez Johnson. Johnson has narrowed his list to Michigan, Ohio State, Kansas, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

After wrapping up his freshman season, Johnson surprised Illinois fans by entering the transfer portal. In his single season with the Illini, Johnson averaged seven points and 6.7 rebounds in 17 minutes per game, earning the title of the 26th-best player in the portal, according to On3.
Standing at 6-9, Johnson may not fully replace the height of Goldin or Wolf, but he could be a valuable “4” for Michigan. Known for his strong presence in the paint, Johnson isn’t afraid to battle under the basket. If he chooses Michigan, he could provide crucial depth to the Wolverines’ frontcourt next season.
