The Philadelphia Eagles have been active in the offseason, but not all of their moves have been met with enthusiasm.
While the Eagles have lost some players, including Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, and Mekhi Becton, none of these departures were surprising since they were all free agents and had higher price tags. The Eagles didn’t have much control over those exits as the players chose to sign elsewhere.
However, one move that raised eyebrows was the trade that sent C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans. This trade came as a bit of a shock and seemed to come out of nowhere.
In exchange for Gardner-Johnson, the Eagles acquired Kenyon Green, who is expected to help fill the void left by Becton. Still, ESPN’s Ben Solak expressed concerns about the trade.
“I didn’t love: The Green for C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade,” Solak said. “Green has been one of the worst starting guards in the league since the Texans drafted him in 2022. That said, there are reasons to believe he’ll improve in Philadelphia, where offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland turned Mekhi Becton around last season. Green is young, athletic, and was in a poor offensive line situation in Houston. He’s just another gamble for the Eagles to replace Becton, but it’s tough to see the positive aspects in his play so far.”
Solak added that trading away Gardner-Johnson is especially concerning, considering the Eagles haven’t added any free-agent safeties to replace him. Despite some tension with teammates and fans, Gardner-Johnson’s on-field performance was undeniable.
While the Eagles have made solid additions with players like Josh Uche, Azeez Ojulari, Adoree’ Jackson, and AJ Dillon, the safety position remains a glaring need for the team.
