Iowa Hawkeyes Lose Promising Guard to Transfer Portal
The Iowa Hawkeyes are losing a talented guard, Seydou Traore, to the transfer portal, marking another player departure in Iowa City.
After spending this past season with the Hawkeyes under now-former head coach Fran McCaffery, Traore is set to transfer once again, according to college basketball reporter Jeff Goodman.
For new head coach Ben McCollum, losing Traore is likely a tough blow, given his potential. Traore, a former unranked recruit from The Bronx, began his college career at Manhattan. As a freshman with the Jaspers, he averaged 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 1.5 steals in 32.4 minutes per game, making him an intriguing prospect for the Hawkeyes. He showed flashes of his potential at the higher level of college basketball this season.

Traore played in 27 games for Iowa and started 12, but his playing time was limited, averaging just 16.6 minutes per game. He posted averages of 5.9 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. With his versatile skill set, he is likely looking for more playing time in order to showcase his abilities as a junior.
McCollum has already started reshaping the program, bringing in several players from his previous stop at Drake, including reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year Bennett Stirtz and key assistant coaches. This shift could have led Traore to realize his role for the 2025-26 season might be limited under the new regime.
