Ravens HC Explains Decision to Re-Sign Controversial OL

The Baltimore Ravens are bringing back veteran offensive lineman Ben Cleveland in free agency, a move that raised some eyebrows.

Cleveland, 26, was arrested earlier this year for driving under the influence, just weeks before his contract with the Ravens was set to expire. Despite this, the Ravens decided to re-sign Cleveland, and head coach John Harbaugh explained the decision.

“Re-signing Ben Cleveland was a smart and practical football decision for us,” Harbaugh said at the NFL Owner Meetings, according to BaltimoreRavens.com.

“He’s done everything we’ve asked of him. When he’s in the game, he plays solid football. He’s versatile—he can play both guard spots, center, and even tackle when needed. He’s not naturally built to be a tackle, but he competes hard. He even steps in as an extra lineman or tight end to block. He wanted to stay here, and he appreciates his role with the Ravens. He’s also a key part of our field goal protection unit, where he’s probably the best in the league. It’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough, but he’s excellent at it. As for his situation, the consequences will be determined, and he understands that. We’re on the same page, but overall, it was a solid football move for us.”

Cleveland was drafted by the Ravens in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft and could see a larger role next season, especially after Patrick Mekari signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Cleveland could face competition for playing time from Andrew Vorhees and incoming rookies, but he may be favored for a starting spot as an interior lineman.
