TeRah Edwards, a standout defensive lineman for Illinois, received disappointing news regarding his eligibility. The NCAA denied his request for an additional season of eligibility, meaning he will now focus entirely on preparing for the NFL Draft, scheduled for April 24-26.
It’s frustrating that a college football career could be impacted by something as minor as a clerical mistake, but that’s the reality under the NCAA’s oversight.
On Thursday, Illinois nose tackle TeRah Edwards learned his appeal for another season in college football was denied. In response to the NCAA’s decision, Edwards issued a statement expressing his gratitude to the University of Illinois.
“I appreciate the University of Illinois for fighting on my behalf and will forever be grateful for everything this program has done for me,” Edwards said. “This journey has shaped me in ways I’ll never forget, but I’m confident it’s time to take that next step toward the NFL and embrace what’s ahead.”
Edwards’ eligibility case stemmed from his 2021 season at Northwestern, where he was listed as having participated in just three games, which would have made him eligible for a redshirt. This was part of the reasoning when Illinois welcomed him as a transfer in 2022. However, it was later determined that Edwards actually played in five games in 2021, totaling 55 snaps, which likely led to the NCAA’s decision. Illinois head coach Bret Bielema expressed his disappointment with the outcome.
“We submitted TeRah’s case in January, believing his unique circumstances warranted NCAA approval for an additional season,” Bielema said. “We were informed last week that he wouldn’t receive the season we felt he deserved.”
Despite the setback, Bielema praised Edwards for his resilience and leadership throughout the process. “What can’t be denied is TeRah’s toughness, positive outlook, and leadership. He’s remained focused on what he can control, as seen in his impressive performance at our NFL Pro Day. He’s dedicated to making his NFL dreams a reality.”
Edwards, an All-Big Ten honorable mention, concluded his 2024 senior season with 38 tackles (five for loss), seven quarterback hurries, and a forced fumble. Known for his power, he impressed scouts by bench pressing 29 reps at the Illinois Pro Day, a feat that would have tied for the most by a defensive tackle at the NFL Combine.
Even if Edwards is not selected in the NFL Draft, he is likely to have opportunities to sign with an NFL team as a free agent. Bielema’s players have a strong history of succeeding at the professional level, and Edwards’ size (6-foot-2, 305 pounds) and strength will likely make him an appealing prospect.
“TeRah has made a lasting impact on our program and our defensive line room,” Bielema said. “He has a bright future ahead, both in the NFL and beyond.”
