Attention from fans across the nation, not just in Oklahoma, will be focused on the Sooners this year as Brent Venables’ team aims to rebound from its second losing season in three years.
According to ESPN’s Bill Connelly, the Sooners are among the ten most fascinating teams to watch during spring camp (ESPN+).
The arrival of new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer adds to the excitement. Oklahoma’s offense struggled in 2024, ranking 113th in total offense and 97th in scoring offense, prompting Venables to initiate significant changes to ensure his job security beyond 2025.
This is where the newcomers from Washington State come in.
Mateer, a Texas native who was overlooked by Big 12 and SEC programs in high school, showcased his skills under Arbuckle last year at Washington State before Arbuckle joined Venables in Norman in December. Leading the nation with 44 total touchdowns, Mateer became one of the top targets in the transfer portal this offseason. When Arbuckle moved to Oklahoma, Mateer, encouraged by former Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield, decided to follow him.
“History indicates that a change in offensive coordinator at a school with a strong track record of offensive success can lead to a quick turnaround,” Connelly noted.
Mateer will have several new wide receivers to throw to, including Isaiah Sategna, a former Arkansas player who was the Razorbacks’ second-leading receiver last year. Javonnie Gibson, from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, has also shown great potential this spring.
Conversely, OU’s defense excelled in 2024, ranking 19th in total defense and 29th in scoring defense. Similar performance is anticipated this fall, suggesting that if the offense improves to even SEC average, the Sooners could avoid a third losing season under Venables—and possibly perform even better.
“With OU fielding its best defense in over a decade last season, a revamped offense could lead to a top-15 ranking,” Connelly wrote.
