Texas Longhorns Secure First Commitment for 2027 Recruiting Class
The Texas Longhorns have made a strong start in the 2027 recruiting class by landing their first commitment.
According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, four-star linebacker Taven Epps, from Tustin, California, has committed to Texas. Epps had offers from prestigious programs like Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee, Oregon, Georgia, and others. His hometown teams, USC and UCLA, also extended offers, but the Longhorns were able to convince him that Austin is the right place for his future.
At 6-5 and 225 pounds, Epps is a versatile prospect who began his high school career as a safety before transitioning to linebacker. He has the potential to develop into an edge rusher as he continues to grow. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 3 linebacker and No. 7 overall player in California for the 2027 class.
With Epps now on board, the Longhorns have a strong foundation to build on for the 2027 recruiting cycle. Texas also has four commits for the 2026 class, including four-star quarterback Dia Bell and three-star players Chris Stewart, Max Wright, and Nicolas Robertson. However, there’s still work to be done on that front.
247Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins praised Epps as one of the nation’s most versatile defenders, highlighting his athleticism and potential as a pass rusher.
As Texas looks ahead, the future continues to shine bright, though the team still has roster needs to address for the 2025 season. The Longhorns will kick off their regular season on Aug. 30 in Columbus against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
