Bob Cousy Honors Purdue’s Braden Smith with Point Guard Award
Purdue guard Braden Smith was named the recipient of the Bob Cousy Award on Saturday, adding another major accomplishment to his impressive career. Following the announcement, the legendary NBA star shared a special message congratulating Smith.
In a social media post, Cousy congratulated Smith on winning the award, which is named in his honor, and praised his skills on the court.
“The award means a lot to me,” Cousy said. “I’ve always believed that if basketball is an art, it’s in the hands of a clever point guard making his magic on the court. I still stand by that.”

Cousy also shared his admiration for Smith, having watched him play three times: “You’re a wonderful player. You’ve got one year left, and I offer my congratulations before what will surely be a successful pro career. Job well done!”
Cousy is regarded as one of the greatest NBA players of all time, with six NBA championships, 13 All-Star selections, and a career that included 16,960 points, 6,955 assists, and 4,786 rebounds.
Smith finished the season with averages of 15.8 points, 8.7 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game. His assist average ranked second in the nation, only behind Gonzaga’s Ryan Nembhard.
This recognition is just the latest for Smith, who was also named the Big Ten Player of the Year and a first-team All-American. Additionally, he is one of four finalists for the Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year award, alongside Cooper Flagg (Duke), Johni Broome (Auburn), and Walter Clayton Jr. (Florida).
Smith’s standout junior season has been remarkable, and receiving both the Bob Cousy Award and a personal message from the basketball legend makes this achievement even more special.
