What Has Rutgers Basketball Done in the Early Window of the Transfer Portal?
Rutgers Basketball faces significant rebuilding efforts in the transfer portal following the departure of eight players for various reasons, including graduation, NBA draft declarations, and transferring to other schools. Notably, Lathan Sommerville, Jordan Derkack, and Jeremiah Williams have already left, with Sommerville announcing his decision to play for Washington next season.
The Scarlet Knights are reportedly interested in several players in the transfer portal, including Tariq Francis, a 6-foot, 180-pound guard from NJIT. During his time with the Highlanders, Francis averaged 19.2 points per game while taking 18.4 shots per game. Additionally, he recorded averages of 4.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists, with a shooting percentage of 36.9. His potential connection to Rutgers stems from his mentorship relationship with Brandin Knight.
Rutgers is also linked to two other players: High Point Center Juslin Bodo Bodo and George Washington Forward Darren Buchanan. Bodo Bodo was previously linked to Rutgers during the 2023 recruiting class before the team chose Emmanuel Ogbole instead. Standing at 7 feet and weighing 240 pounds, Bodo Bodo averaged 5.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in his final season with the Panthers. Rutgers aims to address its need for a strong big man by pursuing him.
On the other hand, Darren Buchanan, a 6-foot-7, 235-pound forward from George Washington, has history with Rutgers, having been recruited by them during the 2022 cycle. In his last season with the Revolutionaries, he averaged 10.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, boasting a field goal percentage of 45.5.
