Steelers QB Prospect Drawing Comparisons to Patrick Mahomes

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be eyeing a quarterback with similarities to Patrick Mahomes.

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers are evaluating a number of quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft, but one has drawn comparisons to the NFL’s top passer.

While the Steelers have attended several Pro Days, scouting quarterbacks like Texas’ Quinn Ewers, Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard, and Ohio State’s Will Howard, one name they haven’t attended but has gained attention recently is Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.

In most mock drafts, the Steelers are focusing on two quarterbacks in the first round: Sanders and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart. However, a recent comparison from a trusted NFL executive could shift their focus toward Sanders.

After watching Sanders at Colorado’s Pro Day, Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi, who joined the team from Kansas City this offseason, compared him to his former quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

“I’ve seen a lot of that with Mahomes in practice,” Borgonzi said.

He added, “Shedeur threw the ball well, and we got to see him out there with Travis. And Travis, everything you see on film – he is one of the twitchiest athletes I’ve ever seen. He’s impressive. It was good to see Shedeur go through the whole workout, and the two-minute drill after. It just confirms a lot of stuff you saw on tape – he can drive the deep ball, you saw that here today.”

During his Pro Day, Sanders caught the attention of numerous NFL scouts and is projected to be drafted anywhere from the second pick to the end of the first round. If he slips to the bottom of Day 1, the Steelers are considered a team to watch for potentially selecting him with pick 21.

While it’s not certain the Steelers will target a quarterback with their first-round pick, it remains a possibility. If Sanders continues to receive praise and comparisons to some of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, Pittsburgh may have a hard time passing on him if he’s still available at pick 21.
