Panthers Expected to Address Major Need with Trade to Acquire Key Defensive Player
The Carolina Panthers are predicted to make a significant trade with the Dallas Cowboys to fill a critical gap in their roster.
After finishing with the worst defense in NFL history last season, the Panthers know they must strengthen that unit moving forward. While they’ve made some additions in free agency, more talent is needed, especially in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Currently holding the eighth overall pick, Carolina could be tempted to select a player like wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, but the consensus is that the Panthers will prioritize defense in the first round.
Ian Valentino of The 33rd Team predicts the Panthers will trade down from No. 8, sending their pick to the Cowboys in exchange for the No. 12 pick and another undisclosed asset. He forecasts Carolina will then draft Georgia edge rusher Mykel Williams.
“There’s no more awkward pick than when Carolina is on the clock at No. 8,” Valentino explained. “The Panthers could reach for a pass rusher they’re not fully sold on or take a non-premium position. Moving down is ideal, and getting Mykel Williams plus an extra pick would be a solid Day 1 haul. Williams is a strong run defender with immense potential if he can stay healthy.”
Carolina recorded just 32 sacks in 2024, so selecting a pass rusher on Day 1 seems likely. Williams could be that solution, having posted 21 tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, and two forced fumbles last season.
Though the 20-year-old is still developing, he has outstanding physical traits and athleticism that could help reshape the Panthers’ defensive line, which struggled in 2024.
