Chargers’ Potential Trade for Former Packers First-Round Pick Could Strengthen Defense

The Los Angeles Chargers’ defense showed significant improvement in 2024, but there’s potential for even more growth if they can acquire a proven linebacker through trade.

Although the Chargers’ defense faltered late in the season, they still finished with the fewest points allowed in the NFL, giving up just 301 points. This was their best defensive performance since 1961, when they allowed the least amount of points in the American Football League.

Despite this success, the defense had some weaknesses, especially in run defense. The Chargers ranked 14th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game (117.5). A deeper look at the stats reveals a concerning trend: in their 11 wins, the defense allowed an average of only 97.3 rushing yards per game, but in their seven losses, including a wild card loss to Houston, they allowed an average of 156.4 rushing yards. Their run defense struggled in losses to teams like the Cardinals (181 yards), Ravens (212 yards), Buccaneers (223 yards), and Texans (168 yards) in the playoffs.

According to Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports, Green Bay Packers linebacker Quay Walker has been linked to several trade rumors, with the Chargers, Ravens, and Panthers being potential landing spots. Walker could be a good fit for the Chargers, who have a need for a reliable run defender.

Palacios notes that while the Chargers were strong against the pass last season, their run defense was inconsistent, especially after losing Poona Ford, their top run stopper. Adding Walker to the mix could help improve their run defense, particularly on critical third-down situations. He also points out that while Walker may not excel in pass coverage, he could be a valuable asset in stopping the run, an area where the Chargers struggled, especially with Joey Bosa unable to consistently contribute due to injuries.

Walker, ranked as the 63rd linebacker by Pro Football Focus, had some issues in pass coverage (a 50.6 grade) but earned a solid 64.9 grade in run defense. Despite missing four games in 2024, Walker led the Packers in tackles (102) and was the team’s top tackler in their playoff loss to Philadelphia (8 tackles).

If the price is right, adding Walker could be a significant step toward strengthening the Chargers’ defense.
