Astros Trade Longtime Reliever and World Series Hero to NL Rival

The Houston Astros made a significant move on Tuesday night, trading one of their long-time bullpen staples across town.

According to the team’s announcement, the Astros have dealt right-handed pitcher Rafael Montero, along with cash considerations, to the Atlanta Braves. In return, Houston will receive a player to be named later.

As reported by Mark Bowman of MLB.com, the cash will cover most of Montero’s substantial $11.5 million salary for the 2025 season.

Before the 2023 season, Montero had signed a three-year, $34.5 million extension following his standout performance in the World Series.

To fill Montero’s spot on the roster, the Astros recalled left-hander Bennett Sousa from Triple-A Sugar Land. However, Sousa won’t be available to pitch in Tuesday night’s game.

Montero had been with the Astros since mid-2021 after they acquired him in a trade with the Mariners, who had designated him for assignment due to struggles during his time in Seattle. Montero impressed immediately with Houston, allowing just three hits and no earned runs in six innings, leading to a permanent role in 2022.

That year, Montero posted a 2.37 ERA and a 1.024 WHIP over 71 appearances, striking out 73 batters in 68.1 innings and earning 14 saves.

In his playoff debut during the 2022 postseason, Montero excelled, posting a 1.93 ERA across 10 appearances, including four in the World Series, where the Astros triumphed over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Although he was designated for assignment early in the 2024 season, Montero battled back, earning a spot on the Opening Day roster after a strong spring.

However, after a shaky start to the 2024 season with a 4.50 ERA in his first three appearances, Houston decided to part ways with the right-hander.

Montero will now join a Braves bullpen in need of reinforcement after their surprising 1-8 start. Despite the way his tenure with the Astros ended, Montero will likely always be remembered fondly by Houston fans for his pivotal role in their World Series victory.
