Expert Predicts UNC Basketball to Win Transfer Battle for Kanon Catchings

The UNC basketball team is set to host former four-star recruit Kanon Catchings, who transferred from BYU.

After Catchings entered the transfer portal in late March, UNC’s recruiters quickly reached out, but their efforts remained relatively quiet until recently. On Tuesday, Inside Carolina reported that the 6-foot-9, 185-pound forward will visit Chapel Hill this Friday to meet with the Tar Heels’ coaching staff. Additionally, On3’s Pete Nakos officially predicted UNC to be the frontrunner in the race for Catchings.

Catchings, who was ranked No. 41 in the 247Sports 2024 Composite rankings coming out of high school, had an up-and-down freshman season with the Cougars. Although he started nearly half of the games he played in, he did not contribute significantly during the Big 12 or NCAA tournaments. He averaged 7.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in his first season at BYU. His high potential, however, makes him a highly sought-after prospect in the transfer portal.

Catchings is also connected to UNC through his aunt, WNBA legend Tamika Catchings, who was represented by the Tar Heels’ new basketball general manager, Jim Tanner, during her career. This connection could work in UNC’s favor.

At the moment, UNC is the only school where Catchings has scheduled an official on-campus visit. If his visit leads to a commitment, he would join Jonathan Powell and Henri Veesaar in head coach Hubert Davis’ offseason transfer class.
