Red Sox $19 Million Investment in Lucas Giolito Closer to Return
Reinforcements are on the way for the Boston Red Sox.
Lucas Giolito’s journey to joining the Red Sox roster has been a challenging one since he signed a two-year, $38.5 million contract last offseason. Despite being the team’s top free agent acquisition, an elbow injury kept him from pitching for the Sox. He opted into the $19 million option for 2025 and has spent the last year working hard to return to form. Unfortunately, a hamstring setback during Spring Training delayed his progress.
As a result, he started the 2025 MLB season on the Injured List. However, things are improving. Giolito made a rehab appearance with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox on Wednesday, pitching 3 1/3 innings while allowing one earned run on three hits, walking three, and striking out three. He’s now made two minor league appearances this season, posting a 1.59 ERA with just one earned run in 5 2/3 innings.
While Giolito won’t be pitching at Fenway Park anytime soon, he is getting closer to returning. MassLive’s Chris Cotillo shared an update on Wednesday, stating that the Red Sox are likely to give Giolito one or two more rehab starts before activating him, with his potential debut around April 21st.
“It’s uncertain what the next steps will be for each pitcher after their third outings,” Cotillo noted. “It seems the Red Sox are leaning toward giving both Bello and Giolito a fourth outing in the minors before activating them, which would place their season debuts around Marathon Monday (April 21).”
Boston’s pitching depth has been tested early this season, but help is on the way. Giolito’s return is drawing nearer, providing hope for the team as they move forward.
