Gonzaga has shown interest in Utah Valley transfer Tanner Toolson, an All-WAC guard, according to reports. While he hasn’t scheduled a visit to Gonzaga yet, Toolson has upcoming visits planned with BYU, Iowa, and Utah State. Xavier is also reportedly in the mix.
Toolson, a 6-foot-5 guard from Vancouver, Washington, began his college career at BYU in 2022 after serving a two-year mission. He later transferred to Utah Valley, where he started all 34 games this past season, averaging 13.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.1 steals. He played a key role in the Wolverines’ 25-9 season and their 15-1 WAC record, which earned them the regular season conference title. Toolson was named to the All-WAC team and the conference tournament team after nearly leading Utah Valley to the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by a 28-point performance in the WAC title game against Grand Canyon.
Though not the most physically imposing at 195 pounds, Toolson is effective attacking the basket, converting 65% of his attempts at the rim last season. He’s also a strong spot-up shooter, especially from the left corner where he made 51% of his threes. His ability to contribute without dominating the ball could make him a good fit alongside Gonzaga’s current guards.

Toolson also plans to take a visit to Iowa beginning on Sunday and to Utah State starting next week. Gonzaga and Xavier are two schools who are also involved.

Looking ahead, Gonzaga is preparing for Ryan Nembhard’s graduation this spring, with Colgate transfer Braeden Smith — the 2023-24 Patriot League Player of the Year — expected to step into the point guard role after redshirting last season. Emmanuel Innocenti may also return to bring size and defensive depth to the backcourt. Still, the Bulldogs are thin at the guard and wing spots, especially after Dusty Stromer’s transfer to Grand Canyon, and Toolson could help fill that gap.
Toolson played high school basketball at Union High before originally committing to BYU in 2020. A foot injury sustained during his mission limited his playing time early in his college career, but he’s since emerged as a standout under Utah Valley head coach Todd Phillips.
