Mets Nearing Key Decision on Starting Rotation Adjustment
The New York Mets are approaching a pivotal choice regarding their starting rotation, as they prepare to potentially add a sixth pitcher in the near future.
Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed before Sunday’s game against the Athletics that the team is actively considering inserting a sixth starter into the rotation. The plan would likely be implemented during their upcoming four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals, which begins Thursday.

With veteran righty Paul Blackburn still sidelined and not yet ready for live game action, the Mets are evaluating their limited options. According to The New York Post’s Mike Puma, one name under strong consideration is José Ureña.
Ureña pitched earlier Sunday for Triple-A Syracuse, throwing 65 pitches over 3.1 innings and giving up just one run. He would be fully rested and ready to start on Friday if selected, which would also provide extra rest for Kodai Senga.
Although Ureña is not currently on the Mets’ 40-man roster, the team has two open slots available, making his addition straightforward if they choose to go that route.
Jose Urena, who pitched today for Syracuse, is among the possibilities the Mets have discussed as the sixth starter for the Cardinals series. Urena would be on full rest if the Mets place him into Friday's start, giving Kodai Senga an extra day of rest.

Signed to a minor league deal this spring after Frankie Montas suffered a high-grade lat strain, the 33-year-old Ureña brings experience to the table. He posted a 3.80 ERA across 109 innings with the Rangers last season, appearing in 33 games (nine starts). Over his MLB career, Ureña holds a 4.76 ERA in 232 appearances, including 152 starts. His standout season came in 2017, when he went 14-7 with a 3.82 ERA for the Marlins.
A decision appears imminent, and the Mets could soon turn to Ureña as their next man up in the rotation.
