Notre Dame Holding Narrow Lead Over Michigan for Top RB Target
Michigan still has some ground to cover in its pursuit of one of the nation’s top running back prospects. Four-star recruit Javian Osborne from Forney, Texas, has narrowed his choices down to Michigan and Notre Dame, with a commitment date set for May 3. Osborne is ranked No. 83 overall and is considered the No. 6 running back in the nation, according to the Composite rankings.
The 5-foot-10, 195-pound standout was once seen as a likely commit to either Texas or Michigan. However, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has made a strong push recently, putting the Irish in a favorable position. While Osborne has a strong relationship with Michigan running backs coach Tony Alford, he recently told On3’s Josh Newberg that Notre Dame currently holds a slight edge.
“It’s a tough decision — both schools have great academics and strong football programs,” Osborne said. “I gave Notre Dame a slight edge because of the overall presentation — the football aspect, the academics, just the feeling I got there. But Michigan is right there. It’s really like a 1A and 1B situation. They’re neck and neck.”
Michigan will get one final shot to make an impression as Osborne is scheduled to visit Ann Arbor for the Wolverines’ Spring Game this weekend. He was at Notre Dame last weekend and has canceled all other visits.
Osborne has a long-standing admiration for Michigan, having grown up a fan of the program. He recalls watching Jabrill Peppers and being inspired by Michigan’s tradition and physical run game.
“I started watching Michigan football when I was 10, back in 2016,” he said. “I was a big Michigan fan. I loved the tradition, the rivalry games like Michigan vs. Ohio State — that kind of passion really got me into college football.”
While Notre Dame didn’t hold the same place in his childhood, Osborne said he’s grown to appreciate the program more over time. Still, his connection to Michigan remains strong.
Whichever school he chooses, Osborne plans to be a vocal leader for the program. Michigan has a rich history of star running backs, and Osborne could be the next in line — if the Wolverines can make up some ground in the final stretch.
