Although the Tigers’ 2024 run came to an end with a loss to eventual national champion Florida in the national semifinal, the future of the program remains bright. Johni Broome solidified himself as one of college basketball’s elite players and perhaps one of the best transfer pickups in recent memory.
Freshman guard Tahaad Pettiford also emerged as a rising star. He recently announced via Instagram that he’ll be entering the 2025 NBA Draft process while maintaining his college eligibility. In a heartfelt message to Auburn fans, Pettiford said, “Regardless of what happens next, Auburn will always be my home. And if I choose to return, let’s run it back.”
Pettiford captured fans’ hearts with his explosive scoring ability, particularly in standout performances against Creighton and Michigan in the NCAA Tournament. His poise and leadership as a freshman suggest he’s ready for the next step, though he’s currently projected as a late second-round pick — a factor that could influence a return to the Plains.
Should he decide to come back, Pettiford has made it clear it would be with Bruce Pearl and Auburn. He wrapped up his freshman year averaging 11.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. Whether his next chapter takes him to the NBA or back to Auburn, fans will be cheering him on every step of the way.
