Chargers Could Explore Major Trade With Giants for Star Defender
The Los Angeles Chargers might want to reach out to the New York Giants to explore a major trade for a standout defensive player.
With Joey Bosa no longer on the roster, the Chargers have a significant hole in their pass-rushing unit that still needs to be filled. While they could turn to the upcoming NFL Draft—which features a strong group of edge rushers—they might also have a compelling trade option.
One possibility could involve the Giants, who may consider dealing Kayvon Thibodeaux if they use the No. 3 overall pick to draft Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter. Given that New York already has both Thibodeaux and Brian Burns at the position, Carter’s arrival could make Thibodeaux expendable.
If that scenario unfolds, the Chargers should absolutely try to make a move. Thibodeaux has already shown star potential when healthy—racking up 50 tackles and 11.5 sacks two seasons ago. He was limited to 12 games in 2024 due to a wrist injury but remains a high-upside player.
At just 24 years old and with two years of team control left on his rookie contract, Thibodeaux would be a valuable addition. His $10 million cap hit for 2025 is well within the Chargers’ budget, and he’d be a great complement to Khalil Mack on the edge.
The big question is what kind of draft capital it would take to land him. Thibodeaux was a top-five pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, so the Giants won’t part with him cheaply. A Day 2 pick would likely be the starting point in any negotiations.
Whether the Chargers are willing to make that kind of move remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt Thibodeaux would be a huge boost for their defense.
